The President’s Message

Bob McGowan

2009 was a very good year for the Essex Town Little League.  Membership increased to over 400 players for the first time ever forcing the League to add 2 new baseball teams.  At the same time we reorganized our softball program into 3 divisions and added 3 new teams there.  As this expansion took place, the number of volunteers kept pace.  In addition, our success at teaching our coaches and players the fine points of the game was reflected in what our All Star teams did at the end of the regular season:  3 District and 2 State Championships.  This success, added to what was previously earned, brings the total District and State Championships banners flying over the Essex Town Little League Fields to 51 with 33 of those being earned in the past 10 years.   That alone says a lot about the league, its supporters, and the residents of Essex.

The Essex Town Little League was started in 1979, and because of the dedication of our volunteers and some highly skilled players, it has evolved into a winning machine … 2nd to none in the State of Vermont.  But there are other things besides winning championships that have kept my interest over the years.  When I see a kid who couldn’t catch or throw a ball at the beginning of the season, make his first catch, or get his first hit, I get excited.   When I see a single mom playing catch with her son or daughter, I get excited.  When I see a T-Ball player showing off his new uniform for the first time, I get excited.  When I see an older brother cheering his brother or sister on, I get excited.  When I see families together at the ballpark, I get excited.  These are the things that make Little League great!

So, as I start my 30th year with the League, I want to thank everyone for your continuous support, have a good season, and we’ll see you somewhere around Home Plate.
